Basic Information:

Chinese Name:二甲苯(异构级)

English Name:Xylene(mixed isomers)

Chemical Formula: C₈H₁₀

CAS No.: 1330-20-7

Appearance: Colorless transparent liquid with a characteristic aromatic odor

Molecular Weight: 106.17 g/mol

Solvent Properties:

Xylene is a non-polar organic solvent with excellent dissolving capacity. It is miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene, but slightly soluble in water. It has a relatively high boiling point (138–144 °C) and moderate volatility, which makes it suitable for processes requiring slow solvent evaporation.

Main Applications:

Chemical Industry: Serves as a key solvent for coatings, inks, adhesives, and paint thinners. It is also an important raw material for the synthesis of phthalic anhydride, terephthalic acid, and other organic chemicals.

Petrochemical Industry: Used as a component of gasoline blending to improve octane number.

Laboratory & Industrial Testing: Serves as a common solvent for sample extraction and purification in analytical chemistry.

Safety:

Health Hazards: Inhalation of xylene vapor may cause dizziness, headache, and nausea. Prolonged or repeated exposure can irritate the respiratory tract, skin, and eyes. It is harmful to the central nervous system and may cause liver and kidney damage in severe cases.

Fire & Explosion Risks: Xylene is flammable (flash point: 25 °C). Its vapor can form explosive mixtures with air. Keep away from open flames, high temperatures, and oxidizing agents during storage and handling.

Handling Precautions: Wear protective gloves, goggles, and a respirator when operating. Ensure good ventilation in the workplace. Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, rinse the affected area with plenty of water immediately and seek medical advice if necessary.
